FAQ
An electronic cigarette, e-cigarette, e-cig or vaporizer is a battery-powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine or non-nicotine vaporized solution. In addition to potential nicotine delivery, this vapour also provides a flavour and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke, while no smoke or combustion is actually involved in its operation.
There is growing scientific evidence that vaping helps some people quit smoking. Personal vaporisers are now the most popular quitting aid in many countries including the United Kingdom and the United States.
Modern devices can provide the same levels of nicotine as tobacco cigarettes and can relieve urges to smoke and nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and loss of concentration. They also replicate the psychological and hand-to-mouth aspects of smoking.
Millions of smokers have reported quitting using a personal vaporiser in the UK, US and EU – over 6 million people reported quitting smoking with a vaporiser in the EU alone in 2014. Older devices are at least as effective as the nicotine patch. Newer devices deliver nicotine more effectively and have higher quit rates.
Vaping is most effective when it is used daily and after allowing some time to find the right device and e-liquid combination that works best for the user.
It is completely legal to use an e-cigarette in Australia so long as it doesn’t contain nicotine. If you want to use one which contains nicotine, you can only legally do so for the purpose of quitting smoking, and only if you have a prescription from a registered Australian medical practitioner. Nicotine can be imported from overseas under the TGA Personal Importation Scheme.
State laws regulate issues such as sale of nicotine, use in public places, age limits on sale, display and promotion of vaporisers. Regulations are different between jurisdictions and may change from time to time.
Vape central e-cigarette products have been designed for existing smokers and e-cigarette users who are 18 years of age or older. We offer an innovative and less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes. Though many people have successfully used these products in an effort to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes have not yet been approved by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) in Australia as devices designated for smoking cessation. We also advise that you consult your doctor before use, particularly if using nicotine inclusive varieties.
It should be noted that even though a recent medical study conducted by Public Health England found that e-cigarettes were 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they are still more harmful than using nothing at all. If you are not currently a smoker, then it is not advised that you use an e-cigarette, especially with nicotine.
Some recent media reports about electronic cigarettes suggest that the importation of nicotine in personal amounts is exempt from regulation. As Nicotine is classified as a Scheduled Poison, the penalties for breaking these laws are very severe, and can result in criminal convictions, large fines, and possible jail sentences, so knowing all the relevant laws is very important.
The importation of Nicotine is governed by Australian Federal law, and is enforced by customs. The media reports reference the Personal Importation Scheme for Therapeutic Goods in the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, but fail to mention the important limitations and risks to this scheme in relation to the importation of electronic cigarettes.
- Under state and territory law, nicotine (whether or not it is for use as part of an electronic cigarette) is a Scheduled poison.
- Any product or substance that is a therapeutic good and personally imported under the Act must also be legal within your own state or territory, and therefore be accompanied by an Australian issued medical prescription
If you are importing liquid nicotine for a therapeutic use (such as smoking cessation), it is a prescription medicine. To import a prescription medicine you need to possess a valid prescription written by a registered Australian medical practitioner. Under state and territory laws, only a medical practitioner can write a prescription for a medicine, or prescribe a substance that is for therapeutic use.
Vaping is not harmless, but there is overwhelming scientific agreement that it is far less harmful than smoking. The small health risks from vaping should be compared to the substantial risks from smoking. Up to two out of three long-term smokers will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease.
According to a recent independent study undertaken by Public Health England, e-cigarettes were found to be at least 20 times safer, or 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes. This is not surprising as most of the harm from smoking is due to the tar, carbon monoxide and 7,000 other toxic chemicals produced by burning tobacco leaf. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco and there is no combustion or smoke. Nearly all the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke are not present in vapour at all, or are at very low levels. As a result, vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking.
A long-term study funded by Cancer Research UK found that ex-smokers who now vape had 97.5% lower levels of NNAL, a chemical linked to cancer, and significantly lower levels of carcinogens in their system than continuous smokers. Almost all the harm from smoking is caused by the thousands of chemicals released by burning tobacco.
Even though they may be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they are still more harmful than using nothing at all. If you are not currently a smoker, then it is not advised that you use e-cigarettes, especially with nicotine. Nicotine has been found to have negative effects on fetal development and brain development in adolescence, so it is strongly advised that any woman who is pregnant, likely to become pregnant, or breast-feeding consult their doctor before using our products.
The risk to bystanders from ‘passive vaping’ appears to be minimal. Negligible amounts of nicotine and other chemicals are released into the air when the vaper exhales, and this dissipates quickly. Nevertheless, indoor vaping is best avoided around children, pregnant women and people with heart or lung disease.
Like all new products, the long-term health effects of vaping have yet to be established. However, based on current knowledge of the ingredients of vapour, the risk is certain to be much less than smoking. Studies of up to four years and ten years of real-world experience have not identified any significant risks to health.
Contrary to alarming claims, regular vaping by young people is rare and is almost exclusively confined to current or past smokers. Most teen vaping is experimental and short-lived. Teenagers are curious, vaping is seen as a fun thing to do and some kids try it. However, the great majority do not use nicotine and there is little or no evidence of progression to smoking.
Overseas experience suggests that vaping is replacing—rather than encouraging—smoking of tobacco cigarettes among young people. Smoking rates in young people are continuing to fall in countries where vaporisers are readily available, in some cases such as the US, more rapidly than ever before.
There is no evidence that the increased visibility of vaping makes smoking appear more socially acceptable (renormalising smoking). In fact, in countries where vaporisers are freely available, smoking rates are continuing to fall, in some countries faster than ever. On the other hand, in Australia where vaping is restricted, smoking rates have stagnated over the 3-year period 2013-2016, for the first time ever.
Most vaping devices now look nothing like cigarettes and don’t smell of smoke. Vaping normalises ‘not smoking’, and its visibility may encourage smokers to switch and quit smoking
Vaping is a grass-roots consumer movement by smokers wanting to improve their health and save money. The tobacco industry became involved much later to avoid becoming redundant as a result of this new technology and they have been playing catch-up ever since in this rapidly evolving field. Most vaporisers are made by small to medium businesses, not by Big Tobacco. In fact, the tobacco industry may be part of the solution if it is encouraged to move out of selling tobacco cigarettes and into less harmful alternatives. Philip Morris International, one of the largest tobacco distributors in Australia recently announced its intentions for a smoke-free future. Currently, no vaping devices sold in Australia are made by a tobacco company.
The addiction to cigarettes is extremely complex and controlling, and there is much more involved in keeping people hooked than just the physical Nicotine addiction itself. Existing NRT products such as lozenges, sprays, patches and gums only look to subdue the cravings from your Nicotine receptors, but don’t address the Psychological elements of the addiction. E-cigarettes are being applauded by their millions of users worldwide and progressive health professionals as the first innovative solution to address the cigarette addiction as a whole.
Psychological addiction plays a large role in the cigarette addiction that people are afflicted with. If Nicotine dependency was the only addictive element of the smoking addiction, then simply applying a NRT patch would alleviate any desire or need you may have for a cigarette. As anyone who has previously tried to quit using Nicotine patches can tell you, this certainly isn’t the case. Another indicator of how psychological factors can influence your smoking habits are environmental “triggers”, such as seeing others smoke, drinking, talking on the phone, or certain scheduled times during your work day that you normally have a cigarette break. These are all possible examples of a psychological addiction triggering your desire for a cigarette, and not simply a Nicotine craving. On average, a pack-per-day smoker is triggered by a Nicotine craving for less than 20% of the cigarettes they smoke.
It is very likely that an individual who “only smokes when they drink” has no Nicotine addiction at all, and is only psychologically addicted to the act of smoking when triggered by an association with alcohol. This particular type of “social” smoker had previously no applicable alternative for their psychological only addiction, but with innovative new e-cigarette technology, they are able to subdue their cravings with non-nicotine containing e-liquids.
E-cigarettes not only facilitate a Nicotine fix for the physically addicted users who require it, but also the hand to mouth motion, the calming sensation of exhaling a smoke like substance, and the social requirement of being able to partake in social situations around fellow smokers and/or e-cigarette users.
No. That’s the main benefit of e-cigarettes. Since they vaporise a liquid instead of burning tobacco like traditional cigarettes, no smoke or tar is produced or inhaled into the lungs. Almost all the harm from smoking is caused by the thousands of chemicals released by burning tobacco. Nearly all the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke are not present in vapour or are at very low levels. As a result, vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking.
The laws regulating e-cigarettes and nicotine vary state to state, and links to current state legislation are provided below. Private businesses such as work places, restaurants and bars also have the ability to impose their own restrictions on the use of e-cigarettes in their premises regardless of whether the state they are in allows them. The use of e-cigarettes is also banned on commercial flights.

Yes. The three important components of e-liquid – nicotine, PG, and VG – all have an established shelf life of over 2 years if stored in the correct conditions. When exposed to direct sunlight or extreme heat, these three components begin to break down sooner, and in extreme circumstances the plastic container can begin to break down into the eliquid, similar to a water bottle stored in a hot car. The main concern however with expired e-liquids is the flavour breaking down over time. Each flavour is a little different; some can last up to 5 years, while others lose flavour in only two.
Has Your E-liquid expired?
Here are a few things to check when determining if your e-liquid is still good:
- Storage. If your e-liquid has been stored in an unsuitable location, it may spoil before the expiration date
- Separation. Check the e-liquid for separation. The heavier, denser elements of the e-liquid will naturally sink to the bottom of the bottle, and a little shake may help mix them again. If the contents are not mixing after a few prolonged shakes, it’s advised to throw it away.
- Smell. Just like with the litre of milk in your fridge, one quick whiff can tell you if an e-liquid is past it’s prime. Not all e-liquids will change smell drastically, but if it smells or looks odd, it’s likely a good indicator it has spoiled.
Both Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are considered safe and acceptable substance to be ingested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In fact both substances are part of many types of food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Propylene Glycol can cause a throat irritation in some people. It’s more popular with recent ex-smokers as it causes a peppery throat hit which can mimic the sensation of tobacco smoke.
- PG – Propylene Glycol
- Doesn’t create thick clouds of vapour and has a strong throat hit.
- VG – Vegetable Glycerin
- Has a slight sweet taste. Creates very think plumes of vapour and doesn’t cause a throat hit.
- Flavouring
- Nicotine (optional)
No. The tar and other chemicals in tobacco smoke cause cancer, but that’s not to say that Nicotine isn’t dangerous, it can be extremely addictive. Scientists have found that Nicotine, when administered through inhaling smoke derived from tobacco combustion, can be as addictive as heroin, cocaine or amphetamines, and for most people, far more addictive than alcohol. Preliminary evidence suggests that nicotine administered through inhalation of eliquid aerosols (vaping), is potentially less addictive than it’s cigarette counterpart. Tobacco smoke is made up of more than 7,000 chemicals, including over 70 known to cause cancer (carcinogens), but nicotine isn’t one of them.
The UK Royal Society for Public Health says it is ‘no more harmful to health than caffeine’.. It is a mild central nervous system stimulant and a partially stronger cardiovascular system stimulant. While nicotine can constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure, studies on standard nicotine replacement therapy show that it plays only a minor role in heart disease.
This entirely depends on your level of physical Nicotine addiction, and strangely isn’t entirely correlated with the strength and amount of cigarettes you currently smoke, though it is a good starting point. The reasons for this is that certain people are more prone to developing a physical dependence on Nicotine than others, and that there are several factors involved with your current cigarette addiction, not just the Nicotine.

When determining what Nicotine strength nicapod is going to be best for you, it is important to consider the following factors:
- Nicotine use, although highly addictive, has minimal negative health effects in low concentration dosages, whereas conversely, tobacco kills 2 out of 3 smokers. Therefore, in terms of risk-vs-reward, it is strongly advised to use a moderate level of Nicotine to completely satisfy your cravings, so as to not risk relapsing back to cigarettes. This fact should also be kept in mind if and when you attempt to reduce your level of Nicotine strength over time, as some people attempt to wean themselves off their Nicotine dependency too rapidly, only to relapse during a moment of weakness. Please note, if you relapse, you will continue to have a Nicotine addiction in addition to all the health risks associated with smoking, so many medical experts recommend considering not taking the risk of entirely weaning yourself off Nicotine, and just maintaining a level you’re satisfied with as a harm minimization strategy.
- The strength of cigarettes you are used to will not correlate directly with the level of Nicotine you require from e-cigarettes, the reasons for this are mentioned in the previous question. Nicotine is absorbed less efficiently through e-cigarettes than tobacco smoking, so it is possible you will require a higher level of Nicotine in your e-liquid than what you previously smoked.
- Your inhalation preference, being either mouth-to-lung or direct-lung, will also affect your Nicotine absorption efficiency. As the Mouth to lung devices are a low-powered device unlike some other larger, more powerful e-cigarette devices, users can comfortably vaporise e-liquid containing up to 36mg/mL of Nicotine Salts in strength
- Another way in which e-cigarette users can manage their Nicotine intake is through their frequency of use. Certain users with a high level of Psychological trigger susceptibility may prefer to use their e-cigarettes frequently, with a corresponding lower level of Nicotine. Alternatively, users who only wish to use their e-cigarettes when they get a Nicotine craving may opt for a higher level of Nicotine, with a lower frequency of use.
